Restoration VW Bus Samba t1

When the car laughed at us for the first time in Vienna, we realized that the condition was not so good, but the VW bus was roadworthy and what was even more important, it was complete. This is crucial for a restoration, as some parts are no longer in their original condition.

After the transport to our workshop the real work began. We let the vehicle "dry ice blasting" (this is a gentle process to remove old underbody protection and old oil and lubricant residues from the vehicle). After that, many hidden rust damage became visible. Then the lower floor was removed. So all corners could be examined. It was found that the two main bumps of the vehicle were so badly corroded that they had to be completely renewed. So the body work dragged on for several months. Also, the "face" of the vehicle, so the front mask, was cut out. It was to be replaced by a replica, but had such a bad fit that we repaired the original front and put it back with a lot of effort. To complete the sheet metal work professionally, the proven method of tinning was applied. This is a long-standing job that seals welds in the long term.

After completion of the sheet metal work, the bus body found its way into the paint shop. The repainting took a good four months. Of course, the vehicle got back the original color of 1964.

Parallel to the painting work, the entire technology was overhauled. For this we disassembled almost all parts, cleaned them and replaced all wearing parts with new parts. Also, the engine was disassembled, re-stored and fitted with new pistons and cylinders.

Then it was time: The Samba-bus was delivered with a new paint dress. An emotional Moment, because from this point the vehicle grows together again. It is a nice
feeling to reconnect the parts, which have been reworked over several months, to the newly painted body. Every day you see how the vehicle grows.
Weeks later, then the next highlight: the start of the reconditioned machine. It worked and after some adjustments she ran around.
The work on the interior and especially the replacement of the huge sliding roof cover including the overhaul of the sunroof mechanism occupied us several weeks.
Then all the discs could be used with new rubbers. Now the vehicle looked almost finished. Finally, the bus got the typical bumpers with ornamental horns and
moldings. Then the most important thing: The chrome big "VW" emblem came on the "face". The vehicle was ready. Now the big moment at the TÜV. Here the
work of the past two years was rated very positively. There were no deficiencies and the bus was of course a H-plate.
Driving with the VW bus SAMBA gives us a lot of pleasure. It feels like being transported back to the old days in such a vehicle. Its top speed: whopping 105 km / h.
When driving out attracts the eyes of many people who look forward to the encounter with such an extraordinary bus and express this. It fills with pride when others
are happy about this work, through which a piece of German cultural property could be obtained again.
